I started practicing yoga in 2009.
Inconsistently, I practiced. At first, it was a torturous pleasure I didn't always enjoy. In the midst of each movement and transition and in between these lengthy poses, I couldn't help but wonder, "would this ever get easier?" There were times I had felt defeated. Why can't I bend that way, how do they make it look so easy? I didn't understand but I continued to attend these classes. Sure enough, things did start to get easier. However, a month without yoga and I was back to square one. I hadn't yet appreciated the art of what most know as yoga, and what I now understand as the "asanas". Asana (posture/pose) is one of Yoga's 8 limbs. What does this mean? To put it simply, yoga isn't all about stretching, handstands, and crazy back bends. It is much deeper than the asanas we all perform, or try to perform, in a yoga class. I didn't personally learn this right away, but I have found a simply joy in helping others create their own relationship with it. |
